Colby, 12th New Hampshire Volunteers, writes to his mother and father that the troops have heard of Robert E. Lee's surrender to Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox. Informs that during their celebrations a fellow soldier was hurt as they were firing off guns and lighting canteens filled with gun powder. He remarks that those who said the Confederacy would not fall must be feeling foolish now. Discusses the destruction of Richmond and says that the people are starving. Grant, Commander in Chief of the United States Army, informs Major General Butler or Smith that the 2nd Corps (28,000 soldiers) was directed to march toward Petersburg. He has not heard news of the expedition, but can still hear firing in the direction of Petersburg, Virginia. He states that if Butler or Smith require the 2nd Corps, they should send notice to General Winfield Scott Hancock under cover to General John Gibbon. Title: [An Act for making Current seventy thousand Pounds in Bills of Credit for adjusting his Majesty and the Neighboring Colonies to dispossess the French from his Majesty's Land on or near the River Ohio, and for providing a fund for the Defense of the Frontiers...]

Fair copy of the act passed by the New Jersey House of Representatives near the beginning of the French and Indian War. Passed with some amendments, the act was meant to raise revenue for expenses during the French and Indian War. The bills authorized seemed to have been revised prior to their actual issue. There are many textual corrections in the document. Lawrence was the Speaker of the House of the New Jersey Assembly.

Signed by Paine as prosecutor for the state of Massachusetts. Countersigned by Daniel Parker as the jury foreman and five witnesses. Specifies the jury's charges against Davis in detail. Dated the "Last Tuesday of August." Names penned by Paine, including that of Benjamin Edes, the printer of the June 18, 1776 Massachusetts issue, the one probably forged.

He mentions being in "the Rebellious Town of New York," where there was popular discontent with the Stamp Act of 1765. He describes the destruction of the rented house of Major Thomas James "by the principal People of this Town," referring to the Sons of Liberty, who had committed this and similar acts during the previous month. Four resolutions from the Confederate House of Representatives. The resolutions affirm the Confederate Congress' power to declare war and the President's power to make treaties of peace with Senate approval. Denies these powers to the individual states. It calls any attempts to negotiate separately "revolutionary." Claims they are fighting the war for the "natural and inalienable right claimed by them in the revolution of '76." Reaffirms their commitment to continue the struggle.

Sherman writes to Ord about the Vicksburg campaign, explaining why he considers Vicksburg the hardest problem of the war. He comments on the location of the corps of Generals McPherson, McClernand, and Hurlbut, and wishes Ord had a corps. Sherman also discusses the weather conditions and how he would be glad to see Ord. The letter has penciled underscorings and water stains on last page. The letter was written in a camp near Vicksburg.
