"To the sensible town of Mexico. A Proclamation." States that Americans are not enemies of peaceful Mexicans and respect their religion. Discusses martial law and the power of the army to prosecute offenders. Also mentions that all food and supplies needed by the soldiers will be paid for in full, as opposed to how guerillas have ransacked villages and stolen property. Adds that vendors will have the protection of the U.S. Army. Duplicate of GLC04070.

Mississippi officers request a copy of the communication between Quitman and their state delegates consigning them to serve in the war. The officers are concerned that the patriotism and excitement of Mississippians will be overlooked when compared to the high numbers of Louisianans enlisted. Delegates include Jacob Thompson, Jefferson Davis, and Stephen Adams.

There are two log books. This file was dated using the first book covering Acting Master Shankland's time on the USS "Winnebago," while the second book covers his time as a lieutenant on the USS "Guard" from March 1866 to May 1866. The USS "Winnebago" log: Note written on a preliminary leaf says that information on engagements can found on pages 9, 39, 44, 45, 46, 49, 50, 53, 57, 58, and 75. Says he reported for duty on the "Chickasaw" on 16 May 1864, but was given command of the "Winnebago" on the Red River on 24 May 1864 instead. Took command on 8 June 1864 and reported 28 sick men.…

Anderson was on the staff of E.K. Smith and at one point was ordered to procure arms for Cherokee Indian troops fighting for the Confederacy. Details the fall of Boggy Depot to Union troops the previous day, and faces the reality of the fall of the Confederate government. In part: "the general has concluded best to go present to Blue where much of our lost government property can be gathered...." May describe movements of Confederate Cherokee. With pass for Lieut. President Jefferson, writing shortly after his last Christmas in the White House, acknowledges receipt of the gift of some botanical speciments and drawings from the pen of Miss Crownenshield. Bentley (1759-1819) was a Unitarian Minister in Salem, Mass. and liberal Jeffersonian. Jefferson refers in the letter to members of the celebrated Crownenshield family of Salem. Jefferson's friend and Secretary of Navy, Jacob Crownenshield had died earlier in the year.

Written while Lafayette was planning the ill-fated second invasion of Canada during the American Revolution.
