"It is suggested that Contrabands be Employed to bring down & put in the waggons the dead bodies which, Emit these foul discharges over the clothes of these soldiers, and also that they accompany the bodies to the graves for the purpose of lifting them from the waggons at that place." One side of the envelope indicates the correspondence was sent under flag of truce terms to Mrs. Morgan, the wife of Confederate General John Hunt Morgan, care of Johnston in Richmond, Virginia. Johnston endorses on verso, writing "With congratulations on Genl Morgan's escape." Contains a five cent Confederate postage stamp. Johnston possibly signed in Richmond.

The collection includes a Georgia parole for the soldier (sometimes "Edwin") of New Orleans (#1), an agreement dated 5/22/1865 to register his plantation while abiding by the laws now protecting freedmen (#7); oaths of allegiance and amnesty (#2-4, 8), and three contracts between the Bailey Family (in Arkansas) with freeman Alie Bailey and other freed slaves (#8-10), as well as personal papers. The contracts offer different compensation (one freeman was single).
