Discusses gun boats being used by Grant in attack on Fort Henry. Informs McClellan "Gun boats supplied with temporary crews and in the the field. Mortar boats of no use at present. Enlistments for regular crews going on rapidly. Bombardment of Fort Henry now going on. our Troops have landed three miles below." Writing from his headquarters in St. Louis, Halleck did not know that the bombardment would not begin until the next day, 6 February 1862. The gunboats would play a key role in the Union victory at Fort Henry. Written on Department of the Missouri station.

Reports that 95 Enfield rifles for the 1st, 2nd, & 3rd New Jersey Volunteers were transmitted to the Head Quarters of the Army of the Potomac and were returned with a letter from Col. R. B. Marcy, Chief of Staff (possibly Randolph Barnes Marcy). Marcy attests that his commanding general does not deem it advisable to issue the arms at this time.

Genet was trying to outfit privateers to support the French revolutionary government, and Washington refused to support this breach of neutrality. De Re Metallica or "On the Nature of Metals" was the standard text on mining for two centuries. Agricola reviewed everything then known about mining, including equipment and machinery, means of finding ores, methods of surveying and digging, assaying ores, smelting, mine administration, and occupational diseases of miners. It also contains descriptions of ores and of strata. Pages uncut.

Delivered in Representatives' Hall, Springfield, Illinois. Replies to Judge Stephen Douglas's speech two weeks earlier on the subject of Kansas, the Dred Scott decision, and Utah. Douglas had spoken in favor of the Dred Scott decision and Lincoln's response maintains that the decision was erroneous. This address would provide the logic (and language) Lincoln used again in many of the arguments in his famous "House Divided" speech a year later. Pages are uncut.
