Title: [Permission for Lewis Nicola to move lumber from Fishkill to West Point]

Writes, "Col. [Lewis] Nicola, of the Invalids, is hereby authorized to take down & move from Fishkill such of the useless and unoccupied barracks at that place, as he shall judge necessary, for furnishing him with quarters at this post during the ensuing winter. By order of Gen. [Henry] Knox." Nicola was needed at West Point but could not go until a house big enough for his large "family" was built; though the house was promised, lack of materials and manpower stalled construction until Nicola suggested he bring lumber from Fishkill (see GLC02437.01639).

Petition asks that the undersigned prisoners of war, due to want of clothing for the approaching winter, be allowed to move to Albany to be with family and friends, and so they might more easily be exchanged to Canada. Notes, possibly in Samuel Shaw's hand, appearing to the left of each signature, seem to indicate when and where the men were captured. Next to Wallis's name, for example, the note reads "Taken in Virginia Octo, 1781, & detected in making his escape to Canada to his family" (it is unclear which signer he refers to). Title from docket. Pertains to Dr. David Ramsay's writing on the battles of Trenton and Princeton (26 December 1776 and 3 January 1777). Document begins with a list of numbered notes, which according to docket are a draft of rough minutes "delivered to Doctor Ramsay, who is writing the history of the late war..." (refers to Ramsay's book, The History of the American Revolution, first published in 1789). Circa date based on the first publication of Ramsay's book.

Lutterloh, Commissary of Forage, writes to Woodhull, Assistant State Agent. Lutterloh writes, "I requested you some time ago to deliver to General Knox six Tuns of Hay, for the use of his Horses- I repeat the request, and wish you would deliver it directly- as the generals horses are in Want of Hay..." On verso, contains details of a hay delivery 8 and 9 February (no year cited). Also includes notes from 9 and 14 March indicating that receipts were given to the persons who delivered the hay for General Knox's horses. Verso signed by Samuel Shaw, Knox's aide-de-camp.

Expresses pleasure at the return of Colonel William Gibson. Says there is plenty of food and he is living well.

Bope writes to his father from a camp outside of Green River. Says they will go to Nashville next. Mentions that many soldiers from the Ohio 49th Infantry have deserted. Comments that there has been no fighting for him since Shiloh. Doesn't know where Confederate General Braxton Bragg and his troops are, but states that "...if they give us a chance at bragg we can whip them." Discusses the arrival of tents, and mentions the general good health of the 49th. Envelope has image and the slogan "Remember Ellsworth," who was a Union Colonel and the first casualty of the Civil War.

Asks him to send a pair along with apple butter and butter. Envelope has image of Union flag.

Relates that some fighting has been reported and it is said that Rosecrans has gathered 35,000 cavalry to attack the enemy. Thanks his family for the food they sent him and requests that they send him some emery paper (for filing his gun), tea, and pepper. Reports that Rosecrans has taken five or six hundred rebel prisoners to Nashville. Writes that rebels planted two underground shells on the railroad tracks which caused severe damage to the tracks but resulted in no casualties to either army. Discusses spending the fourth of July in Dixie land. He also reports that furloughs will only be granted with a recommendation from a doctor. Pages five and six differ in size from pages one to four.
