Responds to the drought and lack of food. Reports a visit to King Billy Bowlegs, presenting Bowlegs's sister with "rot gut" whiskey. Inquires about the upcoming county elections in Ohio. "I was out in the woods some distance about a week ago, with the Indian agent, to see King Bowlegs and twenty or thirty of his warriors. He was very polite, spread skins for us on the ground and an awning over head to keep off the sun. All passed off very orderly and quietly, the King and his warriors seated crosslegged around us. When Billy spoke all the others kept a respectful silence."

The Captain James R. Kelly collection of Civil War correspondence contains 42 items. Kelly served with Company K of the 14th Regiment Indiana Volunteers from 1861 until his death on 8 May 1862. He saw action at Cheat Mountain and in the Shenandoah Valley. Captain Kelly's papers include letters to his wife Mary (#1-3, 8-24), living in Bloomington, Indiana, and inventories of the possessions of dead soldiers from his company (#4-8). Mary Kelly wrote letters (#25-34) to her mother, sister and daughter, Sisy. Item #36 is a post-war manuscript, probably written by Sisy Kelly. The collection also…

He bitterly complains about the rugged, "miserable" mountain landscape. He discusses food and illness in camp. In previous letters he wrote and comments about the supposed loyalty of the people west of the Alleghenies. Rebels hiding in bushes attacked a cavalry scouting party.

Discusses camp life, quality of troops, killing and captured rebels. His regiment has not received any mail since they came to Virginia on July 6th. He writes a description of the mountain and describes an alarm in camp. A group of "miserable Scamps" have been discharged in disgrace. [Apparently, Kelly wrote the circumstances for their disgrace in an earlier letter, not in the collection.] Continued on 7/23/1861. Scouts surprised a "Secessionist Camp" of "44 men armed & a lot of women." Thirty-four of the men were killed and Kelly expects the rest will be hanged.
