Moe recalls the Sunday afternoon war was declared. They took a walk with Paul and Bess and walked near Manhattan Beach, then turned on the radio to find out the news that would change the course of their lives.

Moe has cabin fever and must go into town for a couple of days. He mentions that he is wearing the sweater that Alfred sent him

Moe notes that Sylvia did not eat turkey for Thanksgiving. He, himself, had turkey but her meal sounded superior. He feels grateful that so many family and friends remembered their anniversary.

Moe received a letter from Marge and has been sticking close to home base this week. He mostly plays gin and goes to the local pub.

Moe is disappointed because Sylvia didn't send the money he asked for and is hoping that it just hasn't arrived yet. He reminds her that the money he makes is just enough to get through the month.

Moe thanks Sylvia for the package, he is also happy for the letter he received from her on his birthday. He reassures her that he is very safe and couldn't be any safer if he were in Brooklyn.

Moe received Sylvia's birthday card and is keeping it on the mantel above the fire. He thanks Mad, Bess and Ben for their contributions.

Moe refers to an increased allotment of support for his parents and says it will be able to prove he was their chief source of support so that they can get a few extra dollars.

Moe wanted to spend the afternoon in town but woke up too late. He mentions that he has not had a letter from Marty in a while, and inquires after Olga.

Moe went to his favorite place, the English-Speaking Union. Afterwards, he was walking when suddenly he bumped into an elderly gentleman, but no harm done.

Moe had a letter from one of the boys in the office, and a letter from Seymour Greenberg, the man he used to get a package from every Christmas. He said the firm had not forgotten him.

Moe is planning to go to town with boys and compliments Sylvia and Esther S. on their fund-raising scheme.

Moe is having less trouble sleeping during the day because of his blackout shade. He says he will pin up Sylvia's sketch of the fireplace in his room.

Moe describes the popular music program he has been listening to. For the past two weeks he has been taking walks into town, and he describes the sights and sounds and the people he sees during these walks.

Moe has had trouble sleeping, he mentions that he and Joe are getting along alright and he hopes to see them soon. He also reports that he received a letter from Marty.

Moe writes they will most likely move again, it seems like they are just getting settled in one place and then they must move again. He knows that this move will delay the receipt of mail.

Moe reports that last night, he, Jack, and Marty began a gin game while tuning into the G.I. station. The next morning after chow, they began a drill.

Moe reports that last evening they went by truck to a town to celebrate the Festival of the Maccabees, or Chanukah. There were American and British soldiers participating and the ceremonies were presided over by an American and British chaplain.

Moe mentions that after the ceremony they were served tea and cakes. He also mentions that there was a musical part of the program in which women played the piano and violin.

Moe forgot to tell Sylvia where the service took place; in the Guild Hall of the City where there were crystal chandeliers. He met a Capt. Hutt who came from New York as well and lived near the beach like them.

Moe decided to go on sick call so that he could see the dentist.

Moe went to the dentist where they complimented his teeth and gave him a cleaning. He reports that he has not received any mail from her today. He says there can be no Christmas until he can take her in his arms again.
