sister [Margaret Parrott] John is proud of his sister and he reminds her to be respectable and honorable, for he wants her to feel equally "as good as those who are we[a]lthy…And if you conduct yourself properly you will soon be a great deal more respected than some of those who look on you with scorn…honesty and industry are the shurest capital any person can have." He believes he will be well enough to rejoin the army soon.

father [C. Parrott] He is going to join the regiment next Monday. He is married and gives news that his wife is going to New York to stay with family. He may resign if his health does not improve but stands "on the top of the pile here now and I intend to keep there." He sent a notice of his marriage to his father and invites him to put in the local paper if he so wishes.

He was almost killed by Bushwhackers on his way back from visiting Henry with the 75th and "had to run the gauntlet" for four miles and "just before I got through I was compel[l]ed to leave my horse & take to the mountains" and walk over 15 miles. The 75th is just 50 rods from the Confederates, "the two Armies lying so near each other and no firing by eather and at the same time each doing every thing to conquer the other but such is war." He believes the Confederates will fall back to Rome, Georgia in which case his department would not have to fight, only to open communications…

He believes he will be able "to stand the service till the balance of the Regt is muster out" on 1 September, a "day of rejoicing." Neither his regiment nor Henry's was in the "big Battle," "the first one we ever kept out of."

Handwritten copy of newspaper clipping summarizing John's life, praising his character and accomplishments, and a describing his death. "At the battle of Shiloh…he was severely wounded in the head…So soon as his health permitted he was again with his regiment…But at length, at the battle of Resacca, in Georgia,…he was struck by the fragment of a shell from the enemy's battery, near the ancle, terribly mangling and nearly severing his leg." General Rosecrans is "still entrenching very strongly." Henry saw "one of the greatest traitors of our land," Vallandigham, as he passed through the Union lines to join the Rebel Army. John is not well. Signed with the rank of Lieutenant. Two poems follow in another hand, possibly Margaret's as her name appears below them.

Henry is sorry to hear that Sophia is not well and regrets that he cannot see her unless the war ends before the fall "which seems favorable now." They marched 65 miles in knee deep mud with after 30,000 Confederates in ten days. Some of the men used the Confederate supplies for the Winchester Daily Bulletin to publish their own version and he encloses a copy. He is in command of another company whose officers were wounded at Stone River.

Henry's "teams were pronounced the best in the Corps by Maj. Gen. Stanley." He commands sixty men of his choice from the regiment. He expects they will stay here for a few months. John was killed and all the men miss him. Henry will bring John's wife John's remains if he can get leave. He remarks that "to be a soldier is to deny yourself of a great many things you would like to do and can not." Written at Ambulance Corps Headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia.
