Letter of condolence from a pastor upon the death of Hutson's fiancee, Emmeline Colcock, who died of typhoid fever earlier that month. Suggests that comfort can be found in the knowledge that this was God's plan and advises him to seek God. Axson was the pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Rome, Georgia. Hutson served as a Corporal in the 1st South Carolina Infantry during the Civil War.

He takes comfort in writing to someone who is mourning as he is. Laments the loss of his daughter Emmeline, and extols her virtuous nature. Gives information about his six other children. States he has been to McPhersonville and found out that Mitchell has died. Hutson was engaged to Emmeline Colcock in 1861 but she died of typhoid fever in late 1861 while he was away. He was a Corporal, 1st South Carolina Infantry, during the Civil War.

Thinks that Marion should stay home because he doesn't know how his foot will be and mentions he is glad Charley Colcock is home. Full quotation reads, "There [is] nothing more pleasing to a independent person than to know that his kindness is received with a grateful heart by those on whom it is bestowed." Among the collateral to a autograph quotation by Laura Bridgman, a deaf-blind mute. Attached to the reverse side of a sheet of paper with two newspaper clippings about Bridgman glued to the front. Bergandthat's handwriting style suggests she was also blind, possibly an acquaintance of Bridgman's from the Perkins Institution for the Blind in Watertown, Massachusetts, where Bridgman became a student in 1837.
