Discusses the marriages of several friends back home and hopes there will be women left for them when they return from the war. Does not expect to get a furlough. Informs Joseph that he goes on guard duty every third day.

Reports the sleighing is very good. Updates him on all the weddings. Says Grier is "pretty good at minding what I say indeed much more than I ever expected." Comments the prayer meetings are well attended. Expresses sorrow for "the neuralgia in his head." Advises him to avoid close confinement. Hopes he will continue to clerk in Memphis through the winter: "I don't feel quite as uneasy about you when you are clerking as when you are marching." Acknowledges the many temptations he must be facing, "but remember that out of them all the Lord is able to deliver you." Asks if he needs any money.

Christiana Swan, daughter of James Swan, discusses with Henry Knox's daughter Lucy her ideas about mankind and manners. She says Lucy would be welcome to stay with her and her family. Lucy had asked Christiana to inquire from certain unnamed gentleman about Lucy's fiance "Col. Boid," but she has not had the chance to do so yet. Christiana thinks he won't be forthcoming, as he knows Christiana is sending information back to Lucy. Christiana, herself, can't attest to his character. Christiana tells Lucy of balls she has attended, but ultimately she has nothing that interesting to report.

Deed that states that Hepzebah Swan and Henry Jackson made an agreement with Knox "and a demand of the fifty thousand dollars has been made upon me." The document reads that "HK" objected to this and noted that on November 29, 1799 "HK cannot pronounce upon the validity of the deed nor of the right of Mrs. Swan to give such a deed....HK is ready to acknowledge and he does so to Mrs. Swan in her letter, that he cannot pay the fifty thousand dollars." Mentions another certificate "proposed by Mr. Bradford" and "drafted by Wm. Sullivan."
