Signed as witnesses by the Aldermen and Justices of the Peace for the City and County of New York: John Cruger, Simon Johnson, Francis Gilpin, Philip Livingston (the Declaration of Independence signer), Leonard Lispenard, and William Coventry. Ann was previously owned by Eve Scurlock, a tavern keeper, who had recently died. Her will freed Ann. John Vanduersen, a cordswain, and Peter Burger, a cooper, paid the bond necessary to manumit her. Cartoon depicting the capture of Jefferson Davis. Depicts his rumored attempt to escape in women's clothing. Davis had actually thrown his wife's overcoat over his shoulders prior to making an unsuccessful dash to elude the soldiers pursing him. Partially printed. Murdock signs as Justice of the Peace for an unspecified county in North Carolina on an order for the arrest of Herbert Jackson, a slave. On the oath of Betsy Lott, it is declared that Jackson, a slave owned by [Ty Whited or Whitehead], obtained bacon from another slave. Apparently, "stole a bit of curd bacon" was previously struck and replaced with "bought and received one piece of bacon from Nelson, a slave in the service of Julia Minor." Detailed draft of General Schuyler's instructions to Colonel Van Schaick for a raid against the Onondaga Indians. Asks Van Schaick to exclude Indian allies from the expedition and to take measures to prevent the rape of any women taken captive. Van Schaick covered 180 miles in less than a week, severely punishing the Onondagas. The expedition was a retaliation for Indian attacks in 1778 and was executed in conjunction with the Sullivan Campaign.

Writes to his godmother about fighting the Comanche Indians in Oklahoma. Notes his successful recovery from a "severe ordeal." Comments that "Indian warfare is not the most glorious in the world, hard fighting after riding miles and miles through the hot sun...and getting but little if any, glory." He does enjoy the life apart from the warfare. Comments on the hunting and fishing, and his horses (one a captured Comanche pony). Indicates that he will soon go to Camp Cooper, 115 miles south of Camp Radziminski, from where he writes this letter.

Promise to pay $2,500 by January, 1882 for the Beauvoir plantation owned by Dorsey in Harrison County, Mississippi. The note was to serve as a lien against the property. Davis and his wife moved onto the estate grounds in 1877, so that Davis could write his memoirs. Dorsey died before the note came due, but left Beauvoir and three other plantations to Davis in her will.
