At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One newspaper clipping sent by Omer H. Kelpe to Virginia Heidt Kelpe in a letter dated August 31, 1944. The clipping features a comic of a man and woman walking down a street. The woman is in a dressing gown with her hair undone. The caption for the comic reads, "Maybe next time you won't be complaining that I'm making you late for the theater!"
