At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Charles E. Wiggins to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated February 1, 1974. Wiggins is against the impeachment of President Nixon. Representative Wiggins urges colleagues to vote against subpoena resolution in the upcoming days. He writes, "If you believe several of the amendments to be meritorious, as I do, I hope you will vote 'No' on moving the previous question."
