At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from E.T. Wiggins to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated February 8, 1974. Wiggins is against the impeachment of President Nixon and writes, "... heartfelt thanks for your stand -- longley, as it must have been -- to be counted on the side of... objectively oriented Americans."
