At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One issue of "The Woman's Tribune, Vol. V, No. 35," printed in Beatrice, Nebraska and dated July 7, 1888. This newspaper was established by Clara Belwick Colby. The item contains articles regarding women's suffrage. It includes printed copies of letters from Susan B Susan B. Anthony and May Wright Sewall to Benjamin Harrison where they refer to women as "lawful citizens"; poetry by female authors; an article addressing the health concerns of women's apparel such as the tightness of the corset; mention of the Cincinnati's Centennial Exposition of 1888; Elizabeth Lyle Saxon's visit to Nebraska related to suffrage work; Viroqua, an Mohawk physician; and updates on other suffrage conventions taking place around the United States.
