At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Indicates that he voted against a bankruptcy law when a member of Congress, describing such laws as "one of the great evils that always to be avoided." Also notes that he believes the people of Hobart's district would vote overwhelmingly against a system of bankruptcy laws. Also discusses the election of Philip Barbour as Speaker of the House, explaining that he considers "it a triumph of the republicans over the Clintonians, who I have ever considered and viewed as federalists in disguise."
