"The New Doctrine of Church and State" notes changes made in proscribed church doctrine through a lengthy article examining the debate between church and state with particular consideration given to the Confederate Congress. An editorial titled "Constrast of Races" discusses war as a leveler of races. "Army Correspondence" presents excerpts from a soldier's letter describing winter conditions, especially sickness of the soldiers. A brief article titled "How They Reform Little White Children in New England" describes brutal ways children are punished. "Notes on the Times" includes reports on Fort Sumter and the Gregg and Cummings Point batteries in Charleston, a fire at Jefferson Davis's mansion, and a skirmish at Boone, amongst other items. Also printed is a dispatch from General Longstreet from Russellville, Tennessee.
