Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A photograph of General Marsena Rudolph Patrick and his staff seated on a porch. Patrick is seated at center with hate on knee and holding saber. Patrick was the Provost Marshal for the Army of the Potomic for much of the war. Note a drapery / banner hanging from the front of the porch that is furled. Inscription on verso: "Gardner XXIV 588." Nearly the identical photo can be seen.
