Received Knox's letter but wanted to wait until he arrived in New York City before he responded. Declares that he has never seen a place in so much distress. Explains that Mr. [Alexander] Macomb is under so much stress that he has "gone beyond redemption, and must begin the world again." Has heard that before Saturday more than forty noteworthy people will "stop" (meaning stop payment to their creditors, thereby declaring bankruptcy). Discusses a recent visit with Mr. [William] Duer. Duer requested that Ogden transport a financial note to Mr. John Pintard, but Ogden did not want to oblige until he spoke to Knox about the subject. Describes his dilemma. Sends love from himself and his wife to Mrs. Knox. "Free" stamped on address leaf with no signature.

The copyright law of the United States (title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specific conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be “used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research.” If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of “fair use,” that user may be liable for copyright infringement. This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.
