At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from John B. Colligan to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated August 6, 1974. Colligan supports the impeachment of President Nixon. He asks Moorhead to use his office to make a real difference, and fix the problem of Nixon. Either by convincing him to resign or impeaching and removing him. He writes, "We cannot allow his selfishness to grind this country to a halt."
