At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from J.H. McManus Jr. to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated November 4, 1973. McManus supports the impeachment of President Nixon. He list grievances against Nixon, and mentions that he is a Californian construction laborer. He comments, "I am expected to obey the law. You are expected to do likewise. and Richard Nixon must do so also."
