At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from L.R. Wolter to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated November 4, 1973. Wolter supports the impeachment of President Nixon. The letter is written on a photocopy of a Detroit newspaper article from The Sunday News entitled "Nixon should go: Enough is enough!" Wolter writes, "As representative middle Americans, we agree with this editorial."
