At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from D. Longmire to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated November 5, 1973. Longmire supports the impeachment of President Nixon. He mentions the possibility of election fraud and writes, "We cannot tolerate a president who lies who cannot select good men, who has stolen an election, who thinks he is above the Congress."
