At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Richard M. Betts to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated November 5, 1973. Betts supports the impeachment of President Nixon. He believes that another special prosecutor must be appointed, he states, "It is clearly asking too much of any administration to investigate numbers of its own friends, appointees, and aids."
