At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Carolyn S. Estrada and Marshall U. Estrada, Jr. to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated October 23, 1973. The Estradas support the impeachment of President Nixon. They mention the firing of special prosecutor Archibald Cox and the resignations of Attorney General Elliot Richardson and Deputy Attorney General William Ruckelshaus in the Saturday night massacre. They declare that "Mr. Nixon considers himself above law."
