At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Sayls supports the impeachment of President Nixon, She mentions the firing of special prosecutor Archibald Cox and declares, "The disregard for the separation of powers principle by the President lends a rather hollow ring to his earlier claim for the right of retention of the so-called 'Watergate tapes' and presidential papers."
