At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Melissa Holmes to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated 1973-1974. Holmes supports the impeachment of President Nixon. She presses Congress to stand up for the Constitution and fulfill their duty to the people. She pleads, "Mr. Moorhead, do not fail to uphold the Constitution which you have pledged as a public servant to honor."
