At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One telegram from Geraldine Vetter, Thomas Vetter, Nathan A. Safian, Elaine L. Safian, and Edwin Brachman, to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated November 4, 1973. The Vetters, the Safians and Mr. Brachman are against the impeachment of President Nixon. They state, "We feel that impeachment of Richard Milhaus Nixon as President Of these great United States would be diametrically opposed to the best interest of our country."
