At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from the Peterson family to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated 1973. The Peterson family is against the impeachment of President Nixon. They remark on the President's efforts for world peace, and write, "Is the price of shooting Richard Nixon down worth the blood spared in our president's efforts for world peace?"
