Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The postcard, addressed to Davis in Spokane, WA, is written on a postcard depicting St. Marcus' Square, Venice. Nellie is flying from Berlin to Copenhagen, and the postcard is written from a layover in Hamburg. She continues the plane in-flight, and finishes it post-landing. Nellie comments the hotel and food are very good.
