At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Discusses the defense of Washington and Manassas Junction and a discrepancy with the number of troops under McClellan. Urges McClellan to strike soon, "By delay, the enemy will readily gain on you ... and once more let me tell you, it is indispensable to you that you strike a blow." Ends by instructing McClellan, "You must act." With provenance note on back.
