At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Concerns the cession of Stockbridge and Munsee lands in Wisconsin and Minnesota, their removal, and the remuneration they will receive. Authorized by President Franklin Pierce. Treaty arranged by Francis Huebschmann, Commissioner on the part of the United States, and the leaders of the Stockbridge and Munsee on 5 February 1856 (and ratified on 8 September 1856).
