At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Informs Hobart that A.H. Lawrence & Co. would not make the endorsement because they claimed they did not have any authority to do so, "except in case of payment of the residue." Mentions he has written to Mr. Winslow so ask "what to return or keep the Papers." Possibly related to the support of a church in Hanover, New Hampshire.
