Reports on action at the battle of Antietam, focusing on Second Corps. "I regret that the loss in my corps was very heavy, which is to be accounted for by the long and furious contest that my Divisions had to maintain in the centre against the most determined efforts of the enemy. I cannot give too much praise to the regimental officers and soldiers of the 2nd corps." Gives a list of officers who "were distinguished for their zeal and devotion." Final two pages are a postscript, dated 6 October 1862, also written and signed twice by Sumner. Lists batteries and other officers that "rendered distinguished service." Report sent to "Brigadier General S. Williams, Assistant Adjutant General, Army of the Potomac." Williams refers to Seth Williams, whole later became adjutant general of the Army of the Potomac. Per docketing, "Official Copy of "Report of Maj. Genl. Sumner Commanding 2nd Corps Army of the Potomac of Battle of the Antietam." Addressed to "Brigadier General S[eth]. Williams, Assistant Adjutant General, Army of the Potomac." Final page endorsed by J.H. Taylor, Chief of Staff, AAG. Originally bound with blue ribbon at top, ribbon retained.
