At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

An editorial titled "Are You Ready?" implores readers to examine their own readiness for final judgment. An article mourns the passing of "The Late Mrs. Catherine E. Maner," termed "a great affliction to the church," and includes a long biographical sketch, continued through two more issues. "The Battle-Field" describes a battlefield after the fight at Murfreesboro. An article examines "Relief for the Poor." Editorials titled "Go and Pray" and "Earnestness in Prayer" encourage readers to make wills and to pray. About a third of page 3 is dedicated to Secular News" from Vicksburg, the West, Richmond, Tennesse (foreshadowing Battle of Franklin), etc.
