Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The officer is seated facing left with his legs crossed. His right arm rests on the table next to him which is covered with a floral tablecloth. When the image was retouched, the legs of his chair were painted over and only partially painted back in. The image is mounted on a board that shows through in the lower right corner. The image is attached to a folded cover which has an oval cut out to display the portrait. Inscription on inside cover: "Library Catalogue." From the Meserve Collection.
