Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

In a paternity case, the deposition states "...on or about the month of July last past one Thomas Lennen of Londonderry or Windham Aforesd. Weaver, in the House of one Henry [illegible] Of Windham Aforesd. Yeoman, Did Enter her Body, & recd <carnal?> Knowledge of her, Whereby this Examinant, is now with Child,...."
