At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes short letter to his cousin (either James M. or Joseph M. Maitland). Informs him that all is well, except that Grier is sick. Tells him that he is sorry that his crops have failed. Writes, "Give my love to all my friends and reserve a full share for your self."
