At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Alida writes her brother that she is greatly concerned with her financial situation, as she is indebted over 200 pounds and will soon have to pay interest on the debt. She therefore asks Robert, Jr. to assist her in procuring the money due to her from her deceased husband's estate, which has been unjustly withheld from her. Docketed on address leaf.
