At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Translation copy in a clerk's hand. Informs Lear that the Bashaw of Tunis wishes to postpone modifications to the treaty pending the return of his ambassadors with ratification of the treaty by President Jefferson. The Bashaw does agree to stop charging American merchants any extra duty on goods brought to Tunis. A note in a later hand: "Translation."
