At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Unsigned, but handwriting suggests the author is Henry Knox. Mentions that he found he owned shares in the Patterson Manufactory, of which Lowe was President, and which was sponsored in part by their late mutual friend [Alexander] Hamilton. Knox's research suggested that the institution owns land nearby, and Knox writes to ask about the status of it, and how valuable his shares might be.
