At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Replies to Knox's letter from February. Relates that he forwarded letters from "some of our best Characters," (presumably including a letter from Knox), to President George Washington. Notes that if he obtains an appointment, "no circumstance can give me greater or more sensible pleasure than the medium through which it will be obtained."
