At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes on behalf of a Mr. Parker who is "sollicitous [sic] to open an account in this City for the sale of merchandise." Introduces him to Governor Clinton and gives a character recommendation. Body of letter in the hand of Knox. Signed for Knox in the hand of Samuel Shaw, Knox's aide-de-camp.
