At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Asked that his pay for service in a Massachusetts company be given to the bearer. On the verso is a receipt dated 15 October 1778 for eighteen pounds for Joshua Pools, drawn by the Select Men of Newburyport on the town treasurer and signed by his father (and also a veteran) Mark Pool.
