Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Vignette oval bust portrait of Lee as older man with a white beard. Lee is wearing the same suit as he was in April 1865 photos taken by Mathew Brady (refer to GLC00579.01 and .02). Verso indicates this carte de visite was created by E. S. Lumpkin, Photographer, 812 Main Street in Richmond. Verso also contains a stamp from Selden & Co., Photograph Dealers, 814 Main Street, Richmond, Virginia.
