At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Wharton discusses the "disposition of forces under my command" with Major General Walker. He comments on their locations and plans to move. He intends to go to Black River. Confederate Major General Wharton commanded the cavalry in the Trans-Mississippi Department during the Red River Campaign of 1864.
