At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Maine Representative Morse expresses approval regarding the establishment of a Republican newspaper in Washington, D.C. to Blair. Recommends as editor George Weston (possibly Augusta, Maine lawyer and author George Melville Weston) to Blair, who formerly served as editor of the Washington, D.C. newspaper The Globe. Informs Blair that Weston was the editor of a democratic state paper (The Augusta Age) in Maine.
