Notes his pre-war service, and a post at Fort Riley, Kansas. Remarks, "In my service in the west I think I can safely say that I did as hard duty and as much of it as any Officer of my Regiment." Serving as President of the Unied States, Johnson awards Nootay-u-hah (or Short Gun) and his brother (both of the Blackfoot tribe) money and a silver medal for exchanging their horses for two white women held captive by their enemies. Document features a gold paper seal from the Department of the Interior, and a red-white-and-blue ribbon border.

Davis asks that his correspondent publish his letters on the matter, in hopes of clearing his name. Davis also writes about the events at the Battle of Buena Vista. Wool had been voted a testimonial sword by Congress but had not received it in California and believed that Davis kept it out of spite.

The collection consists of thirteen letters written by various men but all addressed to Amos J. Harding. The letters are from friends and officers in service during the Civil War and are mostly from Missouri; eight of these letters possess dockets. Amos Joseph Harding was born on 2 May 1839 in Galion, Ohio. He enlisted on 31 August 1862 and was transferred into Company I of the Nebraska 1st Infantry until 6 November 1863, when he was transferred into Company I of the Nebraska 1st Cavalry. Letters by missionaries from north of the Missouri River, 38 miles north of Santee Mission in South Dakota, describing teaching English, arithmetic, and bible to Yankton Sioux Indians. The collection was written to Rev. and Mrs. Alexander Shiras of the Bureau of Education in Washington, D.C., mostly by either Daniel Hemans or his wife, Nancy Hemans, with the greatest concentration of letters in the early 1870s and early 1880s. Both Nancy and Daniel were Santee Sioux Indians. Daniel joined the mission to the Yankton Sioux as an interpreter and a teacher, and eventually became a preacher.…
