He describes how the regiment left New Jersey and traveled via railroad to Maryland. His regiment captured three of Stonewall Jackson's men, whom several Union cavalry men tried to kill while they were under guard.

States they only have 41 tents for the brigade and that they can have 10 days rations at Raleigh by Wednesday. Only dated the 6th, year inferred from Scammon's rank as Colonel.
