Stewart, Commissary to the Army, is ordered by Washington to provide "four days provisions" to enable a surprise attack on the British. General Benjamin Lincoln led the attack down the Hudson River, but the British were alerted, fortified their positions on the Harlem River, and fended off the attack. In the handwriting of Washington's military secretary and aide-de-camp Tench Tilghman.

Wells attests that he received $384.32 for his service as Major of the 15th Regiment, Virginia Volunteer Infantry. States that he was paid by army paymaster S. T. Safford. Includes a description of two of Wells's servants, John and Tim, who are listed as having a "Cold," or "colored," complexion. Rations were due to Wells in Sir Johns Run, present-day West Virginia.

Discusses the removal of the Winnebago tribe of Indians, which is being hampered by white men who trade with the tribe, specifically a lawyer named Lee. To ease the removal the army has captured Indians in a series of raids, including a chief named Big Hawk and seventy three of his men. Refers to the returns from October, November, and December, which he sent out in the beginning of January; says they were prepared together because of the paper shortage. Includes a "a return of all the ordnance and stores of every kind in the department," and describes the amount and type of supplies in their stores, including ammunition, carriages, mortars, and charcoal.

Joseph just bought a Clipper newspaper; he believes "there has been a battle some place, but I cannot tell you where till I read the paper." They are only able to shoot hogs and birds when on picket. Their shanty caught fire the night they were on picket. He addresses Susannah to tell her that a box she wrote Wilmor about has not arrived. He will send home three likenesses.

Discusses picket duty in a ravine and guard duty near the Lacy House. He agonizes over keeping warm and adds "the way we kept warm at the Lacy House was by Running around it[.] The main house was about 100 ft long." He also discusses fraternization with the Confederates: "The Rebels are very sociable across the River and are very anxious to trade anything they have got for Coffee & the way they get it across the River is to fastening it to a board & hoist sail in it & set it afloat & the wind will carry it across."

Some has [sic] lost the use of their limbs altogether & others have lost all the toes off their feet." He still expects his package to come and mentions that it may be delayed because the transport boats have been moving out of the area. He describes rebel deserters who complain of a lack of food, clothing and pay.
